29/10/2018 - Ecology Day (September 14th, 2018)
The Portuguese Ecological Society (SPECO), one of the SIBECOL components, together with the European Ecological Federation (EEF), called the United Nations to establish the Ecology Day on 14th September 2018. The date is symbolic as it refers to the publication date of the modern definition of the ecology concept by the scientist and artist Ernst Haeckel. In fact, this proposal directly follows up on the celebration for its 150th anniversary organized by the EEF back in 2016 and concluded by a Round Table held at the European Parliament in Brussels.
The Ecology Day is an initiative aimed at showing to the general public how the transdisciplinar knowledge of ecologists may turn into a valuable tool to tackle economic challenges and health problems in order to create a more sustainable biosphere and a more equitable society. The past September 14th, ecologists around Italy, Portugal or Spain shared their knowledge and research activities to citizens of all ages offering diverse activities and workshops during the whole day.
