XIV Edition of the Ramon Margalef Ecology Prize
Monday 8 th October 2018On August 3, 2018, the fourteenth edition of the Ramon Margalef Ecology Prize was convened. The award, which is international in scope, aims to recognize people, entities or groups from all over the world who have distinguished themselves exceptionally in the field of ecology. The prize money includes eighty thousand euros and a symbolic piece in memory of Ramon Margalef.
The Ramon Margalef d'Ecologia Prize was created by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2004. The award honors the memory of Professor Ramon Margalef (Barcelona, 1919-2004), an internationally recognized limnologist, oceanographer and ecologist who carried out a scientific and intellectual task of the first magnitude in the field of modern ecology. The scientific work of Margalef is huge, contributing remarkably to the development of areas such as population ecology, limnology, as well as to our understanding of ecosystems and the role of the human being in the biosphere.
Previous editions have awarded scientists like Paul Dayton, John Lawton, Harold Mooney, Daniel Pauly, Paul Ehrlich, Simon Levin, Juan Carlos Castilla, Daniel Simberloff, Sallie Chisholm, David Tilman, Robert E. Ricklefs, Josep Peñuelas and, last year, Sandra Díaz.
