05/11/2021 - The ecologist Jordi Bascompte, awardee of the 2021 Margalef Ecology Prize
Dr. Jordi Bascompte i Sacrest has been awarded the 2021 Ramon Margalef Award for Ecology, one of the most prestigious international distinctions in the field of Ecology. The jury of these international awards, granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya since 2004, has highlighted with this award the research and teaching work of Jordi Bascompte, who is currently a Professor of Ecology at the University of Zurich.
The main scientific interest of Dr. Jordi Bascompte is the study of the structure and dynamics of ecological networks, considering the mutually beneficial interactions between plants and animals in the theory of community ecology, a field historically dominated by the perspective of the predation and competition.
Among other things, the jury highlighted "his extraordinary talent for selecting questions that can be addressed with data of sufficient quality to reach solid theoretical conclusions".
His research combines mathematical modeling, simulations, and data analysis to solve questions in fundamental and applied ecology. Some of his books have become valuable references that establish bridges between natural history and the theory of community ecology.
The award ceremony will be held at the Palau de la Generalitat (Barcelona) on November 9th for both Dr. Jordi Bascompte and last year's awardee, Dr. Sandra Lavorel, who could not receive the award due to the COVID-9 situation.

22/12/2020 - The ecologist Sandra Lavorel, awardee of the 2020 Margalef Ecology Prize
Dr. Sandra Lavorel has been the recipient of the 16th edition of the Ramon Margalef Award (2020), which recognizes scientists who have distinguished themselves exceptionally in the field of Ecology. Dr. Lavorel’s candidature for this prestigious award was proposed by the SIBECOL, AEET, AIL, SEEE and SPECO associations. The proposal adduced her important contribution linking community ecology and landscape ecology and the jury highlighted that her figure "represents one of the best combinations between the biological sciences and the social sciences."
Dr. Sandra Lavorel is a Research Professor at the Laboratoire d'Écologie Alpine (Grenoble, France). She obtained a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in 1991 and has pioneered trait-based approaches in
functional ecology, first in plants and then across trophic levels, being co-founder of the world's first and largest database of plant functional plant traits worldwide (TRY - Plant Trait Database). She has focused her research on linking global change impacts on biodiversity to changes in ecosystem functioning. She has been at the forefront of the development of new conceptual and methodological tools to address questions ranging from disturbance responses to biodiversity effects on ecosystem functioning. Importantly, she has contributed to the development and implementation of the concept of ‘ecosystem services’, which is now applied to any kind of ecosystem. Dr. Lavorel is strongly committed to the transfer of ecological knowledge to policy and management decision makers, by contributing to national and international panels dedicated to biodiversity and ecosystem assessments, such as the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and the International Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

20/05/2020 - Clara Ruiz-González, awardee of the 2020 PIUS FONT I QUER award of the IEC
The Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) has published the Sant Jordi 2020 Awards, which distinguish works and researchers from all areas of Catalan science and culture.
Clara Ruiz-González, member of SIBECOL and postdoctoral researcher in the Marine Microbial Ecology group of the Institut de Ciències del Mar, has received the award from the Biological Sciences Section PIUS FONT I QUER for Life Sciences, for her project "Microbial Metacommunities: dispersion and connectivity as determining factors of the diversity and function of aquatic microorganisms”.

Clara Ruiz-González focuses her research on understanding the relationship between diversity and function of aquatic microorganisms, mainly bacteria, as well as their role in different biogeochemical processes. During her career, she has progressively moved from a detailed experimental assessment of the responses of marine microbes to environmental factors, towards a more comprehensive and theoretical exploration of the regional and historical processes shaping microbial communities, by means of large-scale samplings of terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems and massive DNA sequencing. This shift has allowed her to explore the relevance of factors such as dispersal and connectivity in shaping aquatic microbial communities. Some results show a high microbial connectivity between terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems through the movement of water in the landscape, as well as between the surface and the deep ocean due to sinking particles. She is currently leading a project that explores the dispersal of species between fresh and marine water systems by investigating the effect of groundwater discharge in the Mediterranean.
More than a century recognizing Catalan excellence
The Sant Jordi Awards, established in 1914, constitute the oldest tradition of the IEC. For more than a century, these awards have promoted scientific research in diverse fields, culture and Catalan language. The awards integrate more than fifty recognitions, under the support of several sections, foundations, subsidiaries of the IEC and the Barcelona Provincial Council. This year, in total, the awards have exceeded 172,000 euros.
The complete list of awards included in the IEC LXXXIX Cartell de premis i de borses d'estudi can be found here: http://www.iec.cat/Comunicacio_IEC/Premis_2020_def_corr.pdf
07/01/2020 - Cristina Romera Castillo, awardee of the 2020 ASLO Lindeman Award
Congrats to our SIBECOL member Cristina Romera Castillo for receiving the ASLO Raymond L. Lindeman Award! She is the second Spanish recipient of this award (after last year's awardee A.G. Bravo, also a SIBECOL member!), which each year honors a young scientist for an outstanding paper in aquatic sciences. The awarded study, published last year in Nature Communications, is entitled “Dissolved organic carbon leaching from plastics stimulates microbial activity in the ocean”, and derives from her work at Vienna University (Austria) on the biogeochemistry of carbon in marine ecosystems. Dr. Romera-Castillo and collaborators demonstrate for the first time that the large amounts of plastic that we deliver to the oceans can leach dissolved organic carbon that is ultimately used by marine microorganisms such as bacteria. In addition, the study shows that the release of carbon by plastic fragments is altered by sunlight exposure in the ocean.
Dr. Cristina Romera-Castillo is currently a researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona, where she is leading her own research project of the interaction between plastic and marine microbes.
Congratulations again, Cristina!!
