Maria Amélia Martins-Loução, a member of SIBECOL board, is distinguished with the Ciência Viva Grand Prix 2021 for her remarkable action in promoting scientific culture as a teacher, biologist and promoter in the area of Ecology.

The Ciência Viva Awards are awarded annually, recognizing interventions of exceptional merit in scientific and technological dissemination in Portugal. 
 
The Ciência Viva Grand Prix 2021 distinguishes Maria Amélia Martins-Loução for her remarkable action in promoting scientific culture as a teacher, biologist and promoter in the area of Ecology. President of the Portuguese Society of Ecology, she has stood out for her public participation through the writing of opinion articles on threats to biodiversity. She was vice-Dean of the University of Lisbon, director of the Lisbon Botanical Garden, president of the National Museum of Natural History and president of the Department of Plant Biology of the Faculty of Sciences.

El Dr. Jordi Bascompte i Sacrest ha sido elegido ganador del Premio Ramon Margalef de Ecología 2021, una de las distinciones de mayor prestigio internacional en el campo de la Ecología. El jurado de esos galardones internacionales que desde 2004 concede la Generalitat de Catalunya, ha valorado con este premio la labor investigadora y docente del galardonado, actualmente catedrático de Ecología en la Universidad de Zúrich.

El principal interés científico del Dr. Jordi Bascompte es el estudio la estructura y la dinámica de las redes ecológicas, considerando las interacciones de beneficio mutuo entre plantas y animales en la teoría de la ecología de comunidades, un campo históricamente dominado por las perspectivas de la depredación y la competencia.

Entre otras cosas, el jurado ha destacado "su extraordinario talento para seleccionar cuestiones que pueden abordarse con datos de calidad suficiente para llegar a conclusiones teóricas sólidas”.
Su investigación combina modelos matemáticos, simulaciones y análisis de datos para resolver cuestiones de ecología fundamental y aplicada. Algunos de sus libros se han convertido en valiosas referencias que establecen puentes entre la historia natural y la teoría de la ecología de comunidades.

El próximo día 9 de noviembre se celebrará en e Palau de la Generalitat (Barcelona) el acto de entrega del premio tanto al Dr. Jordi Bascompte como a la premiada del año pasado, la Dra Sandra Lavorel, quien no pudo recibir el premio debido a la situación sanitaria.

XV Congreso Nacional de la AEET, 2021

Esta semana se celebra en Plasencia, Cáceres, el XV Congreso Nacional de la Asociación Española de Ecología Terrestre (AEET, asociación integrante de SIBECOL) que tiene como objetivo demostrar el valor de la naturaleza para una sociedad global. 

Este congreso pretende proporcionar una plataforma para el intercambio de los conocimientos más actuales sobre ecología, considerando procesos y funciones a diferentes escalas espaciales y temporales en el medio terrestre, con el objetivo final de dar a conocer el valor que la naturaleza tiene para la humanidad en su conjunto.

Durante toda esta semana, científicos de distintos ámbitos se encontrarán e intercambiarán conocimientos, mostrando los últimos avances en enfoques transdisciplinares que abordan cuestiones de importancia para la sociedad, para las cuales la disciplina científica de la ecología es fundamental.

Ahora, más que nunca, necesitamos entender que no hay futuro sin un planeta sano y biodiverso. El Día de la Ecología (14 Septiembre) tiene como objetivo promover la conciencia social de que la investigación en Ecología es indispensable para encontrar soluciones a los actuales desafíos globales.

A Sociedade Ibérica de Ecologia (SIBECOL) convida-o a participar numa estimulante troca de ideias entre especialistas em ecologia aquática e terrestre que irão analisar e discutir a importância de preservar a biodiversidade e recuperar os ecossistemas, como formas de promover a saúde e a sustentabilidade do planeta.

The Iberian Society of Ecology (SIBECOL) launches its second call of research projects for early career researchers (ECR). This call has a double aim. It pursues to support early career ecologists by providing them funding opportunities, fostering the collaboration among them and promoting multi- and interdisciplinary research in Ecology. 

Fund raising is a pivotal – and almost limiting - step for every researcher to succeed in her/his career. This call wants to support both ECRs starting their careers and advanced ECRs by increasing funding possibilities. To do so, SIBECOL opens a call for original projects in Ecology divided into two categories: 

• Starting early career researchers project fellowship (Starting ECR) (One fellowship of 3000 euros)
• Advanced early career researchers project fellowship (Advanced ECR) (One fellowship of 4000 euros).

This call is open to all the members of SIBECOL and their related societies (AEET, AIL, SPECO, SEEEE and marine scientists). The call will be open from July 1st until September 30th 2021.  
To be considered, project proposals must be led by at least two researchers and integrate the study of at least two different ecosystems (terrestrial, freshwaters, marine). We, therefore, encourage the participation and collaboration of ECRs coming from different ecological disciplines to promote interdisciplinary beyond multidisciplinary.

Note down in your calendars the 7th edition of the Ramon Margalef Colloquia “A cross-system view of the biological carbon cycle in the anthropocene”!! The Colloquium, which will be held online from the 5th to the 8th of October 2021, is addressed to recent PhDs and advanced graduate students and it will be an excellent opportunity to foster collective learning through discussions on the analogies and disparities concerning the ecology and biogeochemical functioning of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
